Pastor search faQ

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

For over year we have been trusting in the Lord to bring us the right man to fill our Preaching and Teaching Pastor position. We have seen God move in and through this process to mold and shape us as a Pastor and Elder team, our church, and the candidates. God has been gracious to us, given us the patience, and peace in the process. We have acknowledged Him every step of the way, and He has directed our path!

To this end, we are pleased to announce that we have called Pastor Mike Garner to Creekside Church to be our Preaching and Teaching Pastor. Through much prayer, conversation, and personal interaction we believe that Mike is the man God has set aside for His work here at Creekside. He and Rhonda have been patient in prayer, trusting the Lord with all their hearts. They are convinced that Alaska is where God is calling them and with a shout of joy accepted our call! We look forward to our future partnership in bringing the Gospel to the Valley and Alaska.

There are many details to be worked out, but it is their intention to be in Alaska the first week of August. As many of you know, job changes and moving are among the most stressful events in life. Please join us in praying for Mike and Rhonda as they prepare for their move. Pray for peace, strength, and safety in the process.
We would like to acknowledge and give our thanks to Pastor Nathan, Pastor Adrian, and our wonderful staff who have done an exceptional job carrying us through these tough months.
Well done, good and faithful servants!

To God be the Glory!

Exciting News!
The Lord has been good to us in sending a man who has a passion to preach the gospel, make disciples, and a desire to integrate into our shared leadership model. Pastor Mike Garner and his wife Rhonda currently live in Austin, Texas. He brings 20+ years of ministry experience as Youth Pastor, Student Ministries Pastor, Associate Senior Pastor, and Lead Pastor. Through Zoom interviews, personal phone calls, and reference checking we are ready to take the next steps with Pastor Mike. When the travel mandates allow, we will be bringing Pastor Mike and Rhonda to Alaska for a 10-12 day preaching get-to-know us trip. In the meantime, please check out Mike’s resume including links to some of his sermon messages.

4/07/2020 Update

Just before COVID-19 seemingly turned the world upside-down, we had invited a pastor from Wisconsin to come candidate. He is a Chaplain for the Wisconsin Air National Guard and was planning on transferring to Alaska for his last couple years of Guard if we hired him as our paster. Unfortunately, because of the current situation in the country and his elevated position in the Guard, he is not able to resign…. for the foreseeable future, in fact. Out of respect for our time, he has removed himself from candidacy here at Creekside.

We have renewed our listings and added a few more seminary career placement listings. We are still actively receiving resumes and reviewing them. As we narrow down the search, we will keep everyone informed.

2/21/2019 Update

We were introduced to a guy a few weeks back. What happened to him?

Pastor Brad Neece and his wife, were invited to come take a look at Wasilla and Creekside. While we were ready to bring him back to preach and get to know the congregation, he and his wife Crystal could not find peace in the thought of making the move to Alaska. We praise God for Brad, but it was evident that his coming to Creekside was not God’s will.

Are we looking to hire a new Senior pastor?

No. We are looking to hire a Preaching and Teaching Pastor.

We are “flattening” out our organizational structure. What this means is that each of the pastors and staff will be able to use their God-given skills in the area in which they can most be effective. Our vision for the Preaching and Teaching Pastor will be primary among the teaching team, and a “leader among leaders” in his staff role (mentoring, shepherding, and co-leading with the other pastors and staff)- all in partnership with the Elders. See the job description HERE.

Is there a pastoral search committee?

The Elders and Pastors are the search committee.

Where are we recruiting?

Thus far it has been word of mouth and job postings at Dallas Theological, Western, and Trinity Evangelical Seminaries. We feel that these seminaries align best with our theological and doctrinal statements. If you know someone who might be a good candidate, please direct them to creeksideak.com/careers.

What is the process for hiring the Preaching and Teaching Pastor?

  1. The Elders and Pastors review the resume to see if he fits our needs (seen here).
  2. The candidate is asked to fill out an online application and pastoral questionnaire.
  3. We set up a video interview with the Elders and Pastors where we ask more pastoral questions and get to know the candidate further.
  4. If not local, we invite the candidate and his wife up for a short “get to know us” trip. This is a trip with plenty of free time for the candidate to get to know Wasilla, meanwhile dinners and socials with key church leaders are planned.
  5. Formal Candidacy. Next will be a time for the congregation to get to know the candidate. He will preach two Sundays and we will plan many dinners, socials, and meetings for him to get plenty of exposure to the Creekside family.

At any time either party may halt the process.

Will the congregation have any say as to who is hired? Will there be a vote?

While there will not be a congregational vote on hiring the Preaching and Teaching Pastor, the Elders covet the thoughts and opinions of the congregation. We will take to heart any and all input as to the hiring of the pastor. Our plan is to give the congregation plenty of exposure to candidates.

Are there any plans to hire another Worship Pastor?

Once we have a Preaching and Teaching Pastor in place, we will begin discussions and start searching for a new worship pastor. Alexa Doty and Sheri Williams are doing a wonderful job as our worship leaders. We praise God for their willingness to step up and lead our congregation in worship.
